Cincinnati MSD and Twin City, OH Select Electro Scan

Twin City Water & Sewer District, Ohio, Servicing 3,400 Sewer Customers, Purchases Electro Scan to Find Defects Missed by CCTV and to Certify Rehabilitation Projects

Sacramento, California, USA, February 24, 2014— Electro Scan Inc., announced today that the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSD) and Twin City Water & Sewer District, Ohio have selected the company’s award-winning ES-620 for Sewer MainsTM for advanced sewer condition assessment.

Electro Scan’s technology utilizes a patent-pending process to automatically find & measure defects not commonly detected by closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, acoustical listening devices, infrared sensors, laser profilers, or ground-penetrating radar to assess sewer, stormwater, and water pipes.

Using its low voltage/high frequency technology, Electro Scan measures the variation of electrical current inside non-conductive pipes to automatically locate and measure potential leaks and sources of infiltration with data immediately accessible from its Critical Sewers® cloud application.

“We wanted to combine Electro Scan with our ongoing CCTV program to make sure we are not missing significant sources of infiltration,” states Michael Pittinger, P.E., Wastewater Collection Superintendent for MSD. “Since TV cameras typically operate during dry weather conditions, when pipes show little, if any, active leaks, Electro Scan’s simulated wet weather diagnostics give us a more complete assessment of our sewers to help prioritize our rehabilitation plans. While I have been watching this technology for some time, improvements in delivering its data and open architecture made it a good time to add it to our portfolio of assessment tools.”

“We really struggle identifying sources for infiltration during wet weather conditions,” says Donnie Fawcett, Superintendent of Twin City Water and Sewer District. “When pipes are surcharged, we can’t use TV cameras, and during dry weather conditions, we can’t easily identify any visible leaks.” Providing water and sewer services for the cities of Dennison and Uhrichsville, Ohio, Twin City Water and Sewer District was recently presented with a Certificate of Recognition by the Ohio EPA for recently completing a Source Water Protection Plan.

“I am delighted to support both MSD and Twin City in their missions,” states Chuck Hansen, Chairman and CEO, Electro Scan. “With sewer and water rates rising at a record pace to finance repairs and rehabilitation, leading utilities need to use the latest technologies to make sure they are fixing the right pipes, the first time.”
Last year, Electro Scan was selected for numerous awards, including the CleanTech Company of the Year by The New Economy Magazine, Best Technology Innovation by the Water Environment Federation, and Best New Product by the North American Society of Trenchless Technologies.

The company’s selection by MSD and Twin City Water and Sewer District is in keeping with each organization’s ongoing commitment to pursue cleaner, greener, and smarter strategies to help manage their respective businesses.
Added to existing TV Trucks or available as a standalone service vehicle, Electro Scan is able to assess pipes at the rate of +50 feet (15 meters) per minute, locating sources of infiltration defects to the closest 0.4 inches (1 centimeter) and estimating defect flow in gallons per minute (liters per second), in accordance with ASTM F2550-13.

MSD of Greater Cincinnati is a publicly-operated wastewater utility serving 43 out of 49 Hamilton County, Ohio political subdivisions, including parts of Butler, Clermont, and Warren. It has a ratepayer base of approximately 230,000 residential and commercial users and operates seven major wastewater treatment plants and more than 120 pump stations. MSD provides sewerage collection and treatment services to an area covering approximately more than 290 square miles, containing over 200,000 separate sewer connections and 3,000 miles of sanitary and combined sewers.

Twin City Water and Sewer District, Ohio manages over 100 miles of sewer main and 3,400 customers.
“CCTV will continue to be a good dry weather assessment tool to ‘see’ alignment problems, intrusions, and debris,” states Hansen, an industry expert in the field of sewer condition assessment.

Prior to founding Electro Scan, Hansen was CEO & Founder of Hansen Information Technologies, a leading global provider of asset management applications for water, sewer, and highway authorities, sold to Infor Global in 2007.
Both MSD and Twin City Water and Sewer District arranged their purchases through Cleveland, OH-based MTech Company, Electro Scan’s 2013 Dealer of the Year.
